Katie's Education Adventures

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

The article I read online was "Leave It Alone" H. Burke Peterson.
I watched all of the netsmarts videos. Although I had seen something very similar to this video before, the video that tracked Teresa was very impressive and hit home. A person can track anyone in a few minutes and find out a lot of very important information about them even if they do not post it in their information.
I also watched the cartoon by BYU students about internet safety.
The most important take-always I have from this reading and watching adventures was how different parents are from children now, and it can be very easy for parents to try to take control of their children's internet life, and it not work. If parents do not go about helping their children in their internet decisions with the utmost discretion and consideration, it can be very easy to hurt and even lose vital relationships with family. I already knew of the dangers and had seen many videos very similar if not the same about the young girls who ran away with or were kidnapped by a person they met online. I had thought that of course the parents should be involved, but I hadn't thought of the dangers of control and forcing. There is so much positive involvement that parents can do to help their children to make positive choices.
I shared the video about finding information about teresa, as well as discussed how the parents control hurt her family from the video of the students at Chatham High.My friend was shocked. My friend already knew that chat rooms need to be avoided and that you should not give personal information out online. I wasn't surprised that they were surprised because I was initially surprised (as ridicules as that sentence sounds, I am writing it). I think my friend was reconsider how they are going to deal with internet safety with their family.

Week 10-- Video Response

Multi Media presentation- Brown Bear, Brown Bear

Children are fearless and can pick up computer skills very fast. Story extension on the computer can be very successful and it is easy to send home to show the parents and to keep a copy of it. The goal is participation uses prior knowledge and communicated verbally and they have to think about what they are going to draw.

I love spiders:

Showing videos need to be relative and age appropriate and have audio and visual information. The class disposable cameras and then scanned the pictures- this accomplished equipment operation "spidercam."

internet communication- internet collaboration with another class and created a website. Authentic context is needed and communication for learning- sent pictures to missouri.

Habitats

This shows efficientl access world wide web information for research. Ethics issues- respect copy right issues. use the website, and encyclopedia pictures so they don't have to worry about infringing on copy rights. Use of multimedia to present creatively- then family and friends gather to watch prepared presentation with narration- multimedia presentation software. This helps teach students learn gain awareness of computers in society.

week 9----... ....

My initial observation of the technology in my classroom was very deep- there is a voice box for the teacher and a microphone for students to use for class participation so that the whole class can hear who is speaking. There are computers used daily in class, a projector used daily, and also a Mimio pad- or similar to a smart board but better. There is a lot of technology in the classroom. All parts of this weeks assignment were completed

El Science project-o

We will be using Stellarium to help the student's locate and identify three constellations. Students will locate Cassiopeia, Ursa Major and another constellation of their choice. Students will read the origin story of each constellation they chose and draw the constellations out on a piece of black construction paper with white crayon.

Content:
Grade Six. Standard 4 Students will understand the scale of size, distance between objects, movement, and apparent motion (due to Earth's rotation) of objects in the universe and how cultures have understood, related to and used these objects in the night sky.
Objective 2
Describe the appearance and apparent motion of groups of stars in the night sky relative to Earth and how various cultures have understood and used them.
A. Locate and identify stars that are grouped in patterns in the night sky.
B. Identify ways people have historically grouped stars in the night sky.

Pedagogy:
Students will use inquiry process skills to explore the constellations of the night sky, specifically observing, identifying, and collecting data.

Technology:
We will be using Stellarium and the internet. Students in inner cities often cannot see all of the stars in the night sky due to city light intervention. Using this program will provide each student with the opportunity to see the constellations clearly.

Google Earth--- Frustrations

http://sites.google.com/site/kmceducation/google-earth-tour/EnvironmentTour.kmz?attredirects=0

Brittany Crowder's Earths surface- this had a lot of detail that I liked. I enjoyed that was more global with many different areas being focused on. Madison White's- Physical Characteristics- She had really great videos- excellent resource. Christa Chamberlin- Cultures- I don't think she had her place markers saved to her folder...

Virtual Tour on Google Earth

Social Studies – 3rd Grade Core

Standard 1: Students will understand how geography influences community location and development.

Objective 2 Describe how various communities have adapted to existing environments and how other communities have modified the environment.

· Describe the major ecosystems (i.e. desert, plain, tropic, tundra, grassland, mountain, forest, wetland).

· Identify important natural resources of world ecosystems

· Describe how communities have modifies the environment to accommodate their needs (e.g. logging, storing water, building transportation systems).

· Investigate ways different communities have adapted into an ecosystem.

TPACK

Content- In this virtual tour, students will be shown different regions and environments of the world that require humans to change the environment in order for them to live there. The tour will show a mountain, wetland, forest, and a plain region, showing the physical features of each environment and the students will be asked to think and research how humans have altered the ecosystems to make it more livable, and after being able to see in a concrete way the areas, the students can make more connections and analysis. This tour is focusing on the environments that need to be altered.

Pedagogy: Students will engage in discover inquiry as a result of this tour. Students will visually explore a few of the different environments on the earth that requires humans to alter the ecosystem in order to inhabit.

Technology: Google Earth serves the pedagogy because students are to take a tour and see different environments through the different features, including image technologies and video technologies. This application will get the students excited because the lesson will be presented in a very hands-on way, allowing the students to explore and learn on Google Earth on their own. This technology will be great because they children will be physically engaging in searching and analyzing through this resource as well as having access to encyclopedia information and pictures that can be connected right onto Google Earth.

Week 2 Technology is useful--- and hard

Here is the URL to my wiki: http://katiecampbell.pbworks.com/ YAY

The web 2.0 was a great way for kids to use technology and show what they are learning and what they are interested. It is a great way for teachers, parents, and extended family to keep track of their students.
Creating a wiki was a lot of work- getting familiar with the format took some time, but in the end, I feel that this technology is very useful and I really like it and, most of all, I plan to use it in the future.
GoodReads was a good way to get involved with groups and books. But I have yet to understand or appreciate its usefulness.
Diigo is a great place to stay organized. Today we use the internet and we use a lot of sources and to be able to access all of them, and the specific parts that you need, in one spot is great!
Google Reader is a very convenient way to keep track of and have easy access to all of the blogs in your life.

The Hardest thing, and most useful thing I did was the wiki.

Love Is a Strong Word

I love education because I believe that the future of human kind is in children- and it is our responsibility to ensure that the future is looking good. I want the same and better, life and opportunities, for my children, and so on. And I feel like I can best contribute to the future through education. I want to make a difference in the individual lives that I will touch and teach.
